George Prokopiou is a billionaire Greek ship owner and the founder of Dynacom TankersSea Traders, and Dynagas. He has a reported net worth of $2 billion.

He was born in Athens in 1946 and bought his first tanker in 1971. He is the owner of the superyacht DREAM and NOMAD.

George Prokopiou’s NET WORTH

Prokopiou reportedly had a net worth of over $2 billion, according to Bloomberg in 2015. He is the owner of the superyacht DREAM and the NOMAD. He and his wife own a mansion in Athens, Greece.

BUSINESS

Prokopiou has a civil engineering degree from the National Technical University of Athens. Prokopiou bought his first ship in 1971. The 50,0000-ton tanker was named the PENNSYLVANIA.

The Dynacom tanker company has grown to more than 50 vessels and was founded in 1991. Dynacom specialists in transporting Liquified Natural Gas.

The company owns three specialized tankers for LNG, named Clean Planet, Clean Ocean, Clean Horizon, and Clear Vision. The tankers can handle sub-zero, harsh weather, and ice conditions. 

Sea Traders is active in dry build cargo and consists of a 34-vessel strong fleet; the biggest vessel is the ALEXANDRA P, named after Prokopiou’s wife, Alexandra. The company was established in 1974 to manage bulk carriers. 

Prokopiou’s companies have had more than ten vessels at the shipyards in South Korea, Japan, and China since 2002.

He has been honored with several awards and accolades for his influence and pioneering in the shipping industry. 

Prokopiou was named number 12 on Lloyd’s List of Top 100 most influential people in the shipping industry in 2016. He also appeared on the list from 2012 to 2015.

In 2015, Dynagas won Statoil’s Working Safely with Suppliers Award. He received Seatrade’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 and the Capital Link Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.

Prokopiou is active throughout the shipping industry and has much involvement in how the shipping industry has progressed throughout the last half-century.

He is the chairman of the Greek Committee of Bureau Veritas and the Greek committees of DNV-GL, Lloyd’s Register, and ABS.

PERSONAL

Prokopiou is married to Alexandra, and they have four daughters together; Eliza, Ioanna, Marina, and Maria-Elena.

The Prokopiou business has become a family affair. The couple’s eldest, Eliza, works for her father’s companies, and so does her husband, Nick Christakis.

The couple’s daughter Ioanna works in the dry cargo, and her husband, John Kauris, works in shipping running Kauris Brothers.

Marina works in tanker projects and long-term business; the husband is CEO of Dynagas. Maria-Elena, the youngest, studied economics at Bocconi University in Milan.
