Burlakov had a reported net worth of $1 billion at the time of his death. He was the visionary and owner behind the BACK PEARL. Upon his death, the Instagram account of the vessel issued a statement.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Oleg Bourlakov, the visionary behind the building of SY Black Pearl. Sadly, Oleg passed away after a brief battle with COVID 19.
His vision and desire to see yachts built in the future had a far less damaging effect on the planet. SY Black Pearl has led the way for so many.
As such, we believe Mr. Bourlakov has been the inspiration for and has left a positive legacy for the world yachting community to follow. Rest in Peace.”
Burlakov was also the owner of a private jet, a Bombardier Global 5000. He resided in Monaco and also had a mansion in Barvikha, Moscow.
BUSINESS
Burlakov cofounded Burneftegaz, an oil and gas company. It is active in the Russian oil and gas fields with a supposed 250 million tones of oil reserves. Bashneft acquired the company for over $1 billion in 2014.
Burlakov was the majority shareholder of the Stroylesbank, based in the Tyumen region. The bank lends to small and medium-sized businesses.
He also owned shares in the paint manufacturer Terpentin Preporod and the South Construction Communications Company.
He was the former chairman of the board of Novoroscement.
He was given the coveted title of “Honored Inventor of the USSR,” thanks to the 30 scientific publications he wrote and the more than five scientific inventions he created.
PERSONAL LIFE
Burlakov passed away after a short brief with COVID in 2021. He was married to Lyudmila Burlakova, and the couple shared two daughters, Elena and Veronica.
Lyudmila filed for divorce in December 2018. The couple’s divorce proceedings were long and required intervention as Burlakov accused his wife and daughter of stealing funds. He initiated a criminal investigation into the pair in Monaco.
Burlakov accused his wife and youngest daughter, Veronica, of fraud, in September 2019. He stated the pair had embezzled $1 billion from his business partner, Nikolai Kazakov.
More lawsuits followed, with the divorce set to be finalized in the summer of 2021. His daughters sided with their mother and totally cut off contact with their father. Burlakov passed away before the proceedings could be done.
Sofia Shevtsova is the name of Burlakov’s girlfriend, who claims to have a daughter with Burlakov.
Burlakov’s inheritance is being disputed after this death. Lyudmila, his daughters, his sister, Vera Kazakova, and his girlfriend are all attempting to claim a stake in the extensive fortune.
A 2004 will states his wife to be the beneficiary of his wealth. But a handwritten will was found in 2019 stating that his sister and her husband were the beneficiaries, and they must look after Sofia and her daughter.
